Makena State Park
With its seemingly endless expanse of golden sand beach and perfect bodysurfing waves, this beach is a must-see. Big Beach is the number one spot for sunbathing and swimming. Little Beach, a five-minute hike up and over rocks, is a world-famous nude beach. It also has the best boogie-boarding and bodysurfing on the island, hence the large numbers of young local boys dispersed amongst the nudists. Always watch the weather reports and posted signs. Makena can get rough, and the shallow break makes it easy to get bumped around in the waves.
in '69 little beach was a utopian community. you
had to get out to hawaii to even hear about it.
new residents would pick a spot, borrow a shovel to level a floor, shuck their clothes, and become part of the community there. the wildest, most lawless and partying crew lived out on the point separating little and big beach. their parties went on and on. one night an oriental gentleman- i believe stan, from stan's fish market, brought his surfcasting pole with him at sunset and as his lure slapped the water far out from the beach it was immedately struck by a large fish- possibly a wahoo.this was a really fine fish. today i'm told that i wouldn't recognize the changes. i recall a tale of 3 drywall finishers buying big beach for $85,000 and selling it at a large profit. one word of advice, don't eat the prickly pears!- no matter how thirsty you get from walking down that dusty road.
Maybe the locals are trying to keep this one to themselves! The turn off was not marked, it is one past Big Beach heading south. Access and the beach was wonderful, my boys loved the wave action along with the scenery!
You can not be within this park from 7:45 PM to 5:00 AM.
That is the hours it is closed, being within the park after closing, will have you subject to arrest.
At minimum a citation, all of which will cost money, maybe jail time, and a criminal history.
Also, no alcohol is allowed, again you may be arrested for mere possesion of alcohol.
No Fires, (You can be arrested for that too)
No loud Music, again arrest.
But it is a beautiful place, and I guess because of the laws there, its also, excellent for the families. Just be weary of the shore break, its deadly. I guess that was the reason fire rescue, and the ambulance was there daily last summer
My husband and I and 2 kids just visited Makena beach last week and wish we would have gone sooner. We have visited Maui before, but never this beach and is by far our favorite, lots of sand for the kids, great views and great waves. Can't wait to go back again.
I lived on Maui for awhile and Makena (aka Big and Little Beach) is a wonderful place. However, the waves can get really big in the winter and there are quite a few sneaker waves. People with small children would be better off going to the Lahaina side to Baby Beach. It's a bay and there are no large waves there.
Makena State Park (Big Beach) is very special to my wife and I. We last visited Maui on our honeymoon and named our first born child after our favorite beach, Makena Cathryn. A beautiful 7 lb. little girl.
Little Beach is a small, tucked-away portion of Makena Beach that is clothing-optional. Couples, singles, families with small children...young and old...all body types...You can find them all at Little Makena Beach.
It's a bit difficult to get to Little Beach and requires a bit of hiking and climbing. However, once you get there, it's well worth it. The beach has a very friendly, laid-back atmosphere. During peak seasons, you will often find people barbecuing and playing games on the beach. Even in off seasons, the beach has numerous sunbathers.
The water is a bit rough here, so unexperienced swimmers should stay on dry land. But if you want an all-over tan and the most relaxing beachgoing experience of your life, then Little Beach is the place for you.
This was the first Maui beach I experienced, back in 1990. My husband had remembered it from his first trip to Hawaii in 1976. Whenever we go to Maui, we always come here to Big Beach and Little Beach. You should, too. And if Da Cart is parked by the road, be sure to get a shave ice!
When we were in Maui for our honeymoon last year, my wife and I stumbled on Little Beach At Makena SP. We spent the day tanning all over.
We decided right then that we were coming back to Little Beach for our first anniversary.
Makena Beach is the most incredible beach. We were married there 7 years ago, with the whales jumping in the background. When we returned three years later, there were sea turtles swimming right next to where we were married. Such an incredible place, with a small outcropping of lava, like our own sanctuary.
