There are six sailing catamarans in this fleet. They depart from Ka'anapali, Lahaina Harbor and the neighboring island of Lana'i. All of the excursions are named "Discover." There is the highly reputed "Discover Lanai," which departs from Lahaina Harbor and sails to breathtaking Hulopo'e Beach, returning to Maui in the afternoon. The "Discover Kaanapali" includes five hours of sunning, sailing and snorkeling in the warm waters off the West Maui Coast. "Discover Scuba" caters to novice divers.
This company feeds you breakfast, takes you to Lanai and gives you a brief tour of that island before taking you to the beach for snorkeling and lastly a stir fry dinner before boarding the boat for the trip back to Maui with champagne.
We just recently took the all-day Lanai cruise. From the moment we arrived at the dock (7:45 AM), the crew was in form. The captain was friendly and joking. Each crew member took the time to introduce themselves to every group on the boat and talk about themselves, the boat the trip, and anything you wanted to discuss.
The food which was served all day long - and when I mean served, I mean they brought the food TO you all day long - was very good. The boat is clean, modern, and exceptionally roomy. We wandered freely on the boat all day long.
After the one-hour trip to the harbor on Lanai, we encountered a large pod of over 100 spinner dolphins! Captain Michael slowed and circled for about 10 minutes as we watched the dolphins jump and swim with the boat. I took about a dozen photos and all turned out tremendous.
The snorkeling at Shark Fin Cove was great. The crew took the time to train everyone (if they desired) on snorkeling technique and safety, and they also stood guard with your group as you ventured off to explore the depths. The water was clear and the coral and marine life was beautiful.
After snorkeling, we were given a ride on a performance boat that bounced through the waves up and down the south shore of Lanai...this was great because the kids loved it, and you dried off quickly on the way to lunch. Captain Robin also slowed and spent several minutes with the same dolphins on the return to the harbor in south Lanai.
Lunch was served on the shore under a pavilion. We did not have to get up or clean up. Everything was brought to our tables. The food was filling and tasty. After lunch we were driven to town and placed in our jeeps for an off-road excursion. Our tour guide led us through the mountains on really cool dirt roads, but we drove our own jeeps, which made this very fun. The views from the "Garden of the Gods" were spectacular.
The return to Maui was a slow sail. Dessert was served, and at this point we opened our wine bottle and relaxed for some sunshine and smooth sailing back to harbor at Lahaina.
This all-day excursion was the highlight of our vacation and I recommend it to all who visit Maui.
WE just returned from Maui, and we did the Trilogy Lanai-Sunset sail. It was a fun-filled day full of great memories.
We were with Captain Kevin and his crew tht day, and everyone was so helpful and friendly. Someone was always there to fill your every need.
On the trip over, we started with juices and coffee, and warm cinnamon rolls, and then before we got to the island, a wonderful deli lunch was spread for us to enjoy.
Close to the island we saw one of the largest pod of Spinner dolphins we've ever seen. What a show they put on for us.
We took the optional van tour into the little town. It was well worth it, and very informative. Afterwards we were taken to Manele Bay to snorkel at Huluope beach. The water was so clear, and the snorkeling was awesome. We saw fish that we had only seen in books.
After snorkeling we went to the privat pavilion for the much anticipated BBQ chicken dinner. Worth all the raves.
On our trip home we had ice cream and Captain Kevin put up the sails. All were enjoying the experience of the day, and the sun beginning to make its descent, when we were treated to a very unusal surprise. A mother Humpback whale and her calf surfaced in front of the catamaran. The captain alerted all so that no one would miss this. The mother and calf continued to swim and resurface in our area for about 10-15 minutes. Captain Kevin asked if we were in a hurry to get home....
It had been 3 weeks since a sighting, so this was a special treat indeed. The day now was filled with even more good memories.
For a fun-filled day well worth every penny you pay, please be sure to contact Trilogy. We will definitely be returning on our next trip to Maui.
My husband and I booked the Discover Lanai Sunrise trip on the internet a week prior to our trip to Maui in late March 2006. Trilogy's website is very informative and easy to navigate.
The trip is an early morning start. We had to be at Lahaina Harbor by 6:15am. Since we booked on the internet, there was no check-in procedure. As soon as we gave our names, we were waved on board the Trilogy VI. Immediately after stepping on board we were greeted by several of the crew and offered coffee, hot tea or hot chocolate. Our mugs of hot chocolate were kept replenished throughout the morning.
Once we were underway to Lanai, the crew offered fresh fruit and huge cinnamon rolls for breakfast - yum! The captain and crew were very personable and entertaining. They made sure they came around to speak to each couple or family on board several times during the trip. A rain shower popped up on our way to Lanai and the crew promptly offered rain slickers to everyone on board. Once the rain shower passed, we were treated to a beautiful Hawaiian rainbow!
Once we reached Lanai we were taken on a van tour of the only town on the island. It was interesting to see how the islanders lived and our tour guide was very knowledgeable. Afterwards we were provided snorkeling gear and flotation devices, if needed, and were allowed to snorkel in Hulopo'e Bay for a couple of hours where we discovered many colorful fish. If you didn't wish to snorkel, you could simply lay on the beach soaking up the sun or play sand volleyball.
After snorkeling the captain and crew treated us to BBQ lunch of grilled chicken, noodles, vegetable and dessert. It was delicious and there was a lot of food! After lunch we headed back toward Maui. During the trip back we encountered several humpback whales and their calves. We were also entertained by several spinner dolphins. They jump out of the water and spin around in mid-air putting on an excellent show. The crew offered us soft drinks and water on the trip back as well as ice cream sundaes. Needless to say we were stuffed by the time we reached Lahaina around 3:30pm. No need to have dinner reservations after you take this excursion!
The customer service was top-notch and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to explore another island while staying on Maui.
This is a great day trip to take from Maui to Lanai, the crew is fabulous--very friendly and fun, the trip itself is fabulous, visiting Lanai is a fun excursion, the food is great.
First thing after shoving off, they serve up great fruit & cinnamon rolls and Kona coffee! And then later in the day they serve a tasty lunch they have prepared while you were off seeing the island or snorkeling at the beach.
We saw dolphins, whales on our trip over and just had a great relaxing day. I have to say sailing back into the Lahaina/Kaanapali area in the late afternoon from Lanai is so pretty, almost worth the entire price!
It is pricey however, but considering it is for the entire day, well worth the money. This is something you might want to save your money ahead of time on if you have limited resources (don't we all nowdays?) so you can have at least one great excursion during your vacation.
