Snorkel Bob's [Lahaina]
This is one retail business that's all about island attitude. It provides an entertaining combination of professionalism and playfulness: The shop walls are covered in bizarre cartoon strips and news clippings, along with quotes from the esteemed Snorkel Bob himself. You'll find some of the best snorkel gear here, including prescription (Rx) masks. A variety of tours are available through the shop, so ask about luaus, cruises and dive trips, if you're interested. There are many other locations all over the islands.
We have rented all of our snorkel and beach gear from Snorkel Bob's several times, but never again. 3 days in to our vacation I asked to exchange a boogie board for 2 more chairs, chairs are cheaper to rent for the week, and was told I couldn't exchange the items and would have to pay full price for the chairs. I questioned this policy since we have spent $500+ in rentals the last few years, and was told that is how Robert (Bob) runs his business. Next year when we are in Maui again we'll take our business somewhere else. To add insult to injury the cooler we rented leaked all over the jeep we had when we took a day trip, so the vehicle smelled like wet dog for 3 days. There are a lot of other options on the Island look for a more flexible company.
The clerk was nice and helpful, but when we told him that we might want the gear one more day over the week-long rental agreement, he told us not to worry, that it would be taken care of when we returned equipment. We even asked him the price for daily rental, and he said again, "Don't worry about it." We kept the snorkels, masks, and chairs for one more day, and upon returning it all we were charged for almost another week's rate! If we would have known that, we would have returned it in the drop box the night before and gone without for the 8 hours left on the island. My problem with this experience is the ambiguity of the clerk's response to our pointed questions. He misled us regarding the price by being vague.
Compared to what they charge at the Hotels and Resorts for equipment to snorkel ( which is big bucks ), Snorkel Bob's was VERY reasonable and personally I thought the staff was very helpful.
We had a great time.
The first day on our trip we happened to park in front of Snorkle Bob's and we new we had to rent snorkl gear for the week and went inside to be greeted by a very rude clerk you couldn't care less about us but rented regardless because we wanted the stuff. We found out a few days later that we spent easily $20 to $30 more than the compitition all over town. Upon returning the gear and I just accepted the fact we got hosed the clerk was again rude and indifferent. never asked me how the gear was or anyplace. Just asked for my phone, printed the receipt and haned it to me without even a thank you. Forget this place - Survives on it's location alone.
