Nick's Fishmarket Maui
This elegant spot is a wonderful choice for a romantic dinner date, a special occasion or an evening of culinary decadence. It is located in the palatial Kea Lani Resort, a Wailea landmark. The outdoor lanai is surrounded by a lush tropical garden. Specialties include Greek Maui Wowie (USD8.95) (an innovative twist on the Greek salad) and Abalone Chicago-Style (with asparagus, shi'itake mushrooms & rock shrimp). Seafood rules the menu with everything from salmon to Mahi Mahi. The wine list is extensive indeed—more than 2,000 French, California and Italian vintages are cellared onsite.
This is one of best restaurants on the island. The Kea Lani is beautiful and sitting on the patio at Nick's at Sunset was truly charming.
The service was exceptional. The staff put a lot of personality into their job unlike some nice restaurants were the staff is very "formal." I found this to be very refreshing and entertaining. The servers had time to chat with us about our stay and we had a leisurelly dinner and then took our time to enjoy coffee and dessert.
Everything that we ordered, from the drinks to dessert, was excellent. Over the two weeks that we were on Maui this was the best meal that we had.
Go early to get a good patio table and you won't be dissapointed.
Once good, Nicks is worse every time we go. Now they are at rock bottom. It was well over an hour between the appetizers and the entree, three of seven meals had to be sent back as they were dry, cold and inedible after sitting under a heatlamp. We asked to speak to the manager, and the "manager" who came over was clearly not a person in charge. The whole mess was so poorly handled, that I can't think of a situation in which I would return.
We don't expect value at Wailea prices, but this meal was so bad it ruined our day.
Worse, they made no effort to improve the situation, and didn't seem to have enough management to work on it.
The only really good part of the meal was a small dish of macaroni and cheese that came with a steak. All of the seafood was bad beyond imagination.
i recently stayed at the fairmont--the concierge desk recommended nick's since it is on the premises--what a mistake--i ordered a fresh oyster dish which i thought would be a good choice at a seafood restaurant--bad assumption--bad oysters on the plate--after i rejected the dish, the manager offered no apology and simply asked if i wanted to order anything else--when i questioned him, he snidely remarked that he had deducted the offending dish from my check--i will not return--the balance of the food was mediocre at best-the service level was no better--for a truly great meal go to duo--outstanding food, great wine list and impeccable service
Food was generally very good. Service OK. Took two steps out the door, realized our digital camera was left on the table. Immediately went back....everything cleared off already! Camera gone. ?????? Still waiting since January for an explanation.
Nick's was the highlight of eating in HAwaii. Most of the food in Hawaii was fair at best. Nicks was outstanding. Instead of going to other restaurants we stuck iwth Nicks. Service was top notch, and the AHI Mignon was to die for. You'll pay, but well worth the experience. Anyone who thinks otherwise probably is a little over critical. Coming from a family with a 4 star restaurant, I think Nicks fits that label as well.
This past August, we dined at Nicks, as we do each summer, only to find the usually wonderfully attentive staff less than attentive. We experienced the following:
1. It took approx. 10 minutes for anyone to acknowledge our presence at our table.
2. It took another 30 minutes to get the 1st course (salads & soup).
3. After finishing the main course, the empty plates sat on the table for a minumum of 15 minutes before we had to ask someone to remove them.
It was such a drastic change that we had to ask if they were under new managment.
If Nicks wants repeat business they'd better get their act together as currently it's simply an overpriced restaurant.
The best experience of our lives. We went twice while on the island. We took our 8 year old, who had had her share of eating out. She giggled and was enchanted the entire evening. She would take a sip out of her water just to see a waiter literally run to fill it up. It was hysterical. I have never been so entertained by the staff. They all run from table to table to serve you as fast as they possibly can. It is kind of different, but in a funny great way. The flaming strawberries were the best we have ever had. Eddy Murphy galloped accross the room while we were there. Our bill was $185.00 each night, but it was well worth it. To this day we (myself, husband and daughter) talk about Nicks in Maui. I would suggest to go early to avoid any delays in service. But if you have to wait, enjoy enjoy the beauty. I loved the dining experience , over 2 hours long. Others want in and out, so know what you are getting into . It isnt poor service, it is meant to be that way!!!
