Aloha Mixed Plate
This tourist-oriented spot, voted "best plate lunch" by the Maui News Reader's Poll, serves cheap local eats in a gorgeous setting that overlooks the beach. It's on Front Street, about 10 blocks down from the main drag. Entrees include Ono ($6.95), a mixed Hawaiian plate ($7.95) and the award-winning Coconut Prawns ($9.95). The Shoyu chicken ($6.95) is considered by patrons to be one of the best dishes on the island. All plate lunches are served with two scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. If you want to do some afternoon cocktailing, stop by for Happy Hour (3pm to 6pm daily).
Aloha Mixed Plate is one of our "can't wait to get back to" spots! Have been to Maui 3 or 4 times and this is a great, lazy day meal and MaiTai spot. Food value is super, the garlic fries are THE BEST! and Coconut Shrimp can not be beat. Newcomers must be sure to ask to sit on the upper deck to be served alcohol drinks, but the view is still good in many areas. We just love it and the mixed plate is a favorite. Once we are back mainland, we can't wait to get back to the 'down home' feel of Aloha Mixed Plate.
Great outdoors deck with view of the water. In the evening you can overheard the luau from next door. I got a Lava Flow - which is a Pina Colada with strawberry flavor that was pretty good. The food I thought was average, but my husband really enjoyed. The service was slow, but not rude, and since we were not in a hurry it did not bother us. I would not recommend for large groups - there just isn't enough room to rearrange the tables. Go early so you don't have to wait for a table. Great value place to eat and relax. Has a parking lot which is nice too.
We liked the ocean view and breeze. Food was OK- not great. My husband went to the bar for mai-tais and said they were as good as at the old lahaina luau(next door). Our server however... was another story! Obviously a non-local person, she was very rude when I asked about getting another drink for my daughter because it had something floating in it when she gave it to us. She made a comment like "It's just a leaf and it's always going to have something floating in it at the Aloha mixed plate--(it's outside under some tarp like covers)any way, then she said, "But I'll get her another one--if you WANT me too." She begrudgingly went to the bar and got another sprite(not knowing that my husband was up there getting a mai-tai) and was making rude comments about me to the bartender--she said, "this is not a nice restaurant, if they don't want something floating in their restaurant they should go to a fancy restaurant" NOT VERY ALOHA SPIRIT.
MY HUSBAND AND I VISITED MAUI FROM MARCH 15TH-22ND.2008 WE WENT TO ALOHA MIXED PLATE ON
MARCH18TH. THE SERVICE WAS POOR. FIRST THEY PUT US ON THE PATIO AND WE WANTED TO DRINK SO WE HAD TO MOVE THEN THEY FORGOT TO PUT IN OUR ORDER SO IT TOOK FOREVER AND FINALLY 25 MINUTES LATER WHEN WE GOT OUR FOOD IT WAS COLD. I WILL NOT GO BACK. THE HULA GRILL IS A MUCH BETTER RESTURANT.
We had one rule on our trip to Maui, if it didn't have a view, we didn't go. We stopped at AMP after reading the reviews and were not disappointed. Really nice view and the food was good (not great). If you go sunset is really nice and get the pork. Good happy hour specials and mai tai's were good.
Each time we arrive in Maui, our first destination after getting the rental car is Aloha Mixed Plate. Great views of the ocean, really good food and a totally kick back atmosphere. After a long day cruising Hana or snorkeling, AMP brought me back to life.
The price is right, and the portions are sizable...maybe not the glutunous portions you'd get at mainland restaurants, but fills this 230 lb. guy up no problem...
p.s. There are times the service is slow...that's just Maui time folks...get a drink and relax. That's why you're there...
Expectations were high given the praise, but the food was below average. Servings were small and quality didn't even come close to other places, like Da Kitchen. Waitress was nice and beer was cold, so all was not lost.
The ONLY menu item I would go back for is the Lau Lau. Everything else -- and we tried a lot of it -- was oddly tasteless, overcooked, or both. Weird, but I just don't get what you folks see in this place.
This is the place I have been craving since our trip to Maui! It's amazing. The quality of the food was incredible. I had the breaded teriyaki beef. We tried this restaurant from the recommedation from a local. Our experience was so great, we went back 2 more times that week!
