If you travel to the west side of Kauai and follow the road as far as it goes, you will wind up at this state park. This is as close to the Na Pali Coast as you will get, unless you travel by helicopter or boat. Polihale consists of a stretch of beach that snakes for miles around the coast. It is actually famous for being home to the Shifting Sands beach—a somewhat eerie concept, but definitely worth the drive to experience for yourself.

This is on Kauai Island not Big Island
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/24/07
Don't get this mixed up with Waimea, Hawaii on the Big Island. You have this listed under good things to do on the Big Island. There are Waimea's on othere Islands (Oahu...), so it can be confusing.

Just Wonderful!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/27/06
Yes the road is very rough, and we thought about giving up and turning back, so glad we didn't!! This place was so very beautiful, very worth the time and wow private! You will feel like you own the beach, as hardky anyone is around. Get naked and enjoy this wonderful place!!

A hidden treasure
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/04/06
We went to Kauai for our honeymoon. Unfortunately, we ran into a couple of overcast and rainy days. We were told by a worker at the hotel that "there is always sun at Polihale." He was right. Although the road leading there is a bit rough, I can definately say it was worth it. I have never seen such an amazing beach in all of my life! The best part was the seclusion. 17 miles of beach and I bet there was only 30 people on it. It was beautiful. Do remember to bring a cooler. I was hesitant to go into the water due to large waves, but it is definately a must see.

Be advised about vandalism
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/22/05
My wife and I recently spent two weeks on Kaua'i, I am sorry to say that the lowest point of our trip took place at this beach. After braving the awful road to this place (I cannot imagine this road after even light rain), our rental car was broken into as we napped on the beach. There are plenty of other beautiful beaches on Kaua'i.

Polihale Beach
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/03/04
We married on this beach at sunset and chose it because it was so incredibly beautiful with the NaPali coastline in the background! Rain earlier in the day gave us a rainbow just as we drove to the beach. What more could you want?!

Polihale State Park
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/20/04
If you plan to catch a sunset at all on the island, you are sure to see the best from Polihale State Park. You will encounter your best chance to observe the 'green-flash' as the sun drops into the Pacific with the "Forbidden Island" in the background. I know that you will enjoy the sugar-white sand dunes as well as the pristine aqua-blue water, and that you will no doubt remember this always...
