Grove Farm Homestead Museum
If you want to get an idea of what the island looked like when sugar cane was the main industry, visit this restored historic property. Its many exhibits and displays give hints of what life was like on the sugar plantations of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tour the grounds, which at one point spanned 80 acres, or read up on literature. This is, understandably, a very popular destination for people on school field trips, cultural seminars and other educational excursions. Call in advance and reserve a time to tour the grounds.
Lovely, well preserved farm museum. Tour groups are kept very small (about 5-6 people) to keep the tour intimate and very detailed. The guides are very knowledgable and enthusiastic. A great way to quickly learn about the history and influence of the sugar industry and the Wilcox family on Kauai. Definitely worth the time (expect to spend about 3 hrs) and admission fee ($10 each). The tour group size is extremely limited as specified by previous owner Mabel Wilcox when setting out the terms under which the farm museum was to operate. Accordingly, reservations in advance of one's anticipated visit, are a necessity.
Grove Farm Museum really takes you back in time. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed this - in fact, I've taken the tour twice. I'll probably take it again!
I grew up on Kaua'i and no longer live there. However, this brings me back to the good old days of the camps and the aura of mystery and privilege surrounding the plantations and their owners.
The main home is beautiful and full of interesting decor and furniture. Mr. Wilcox's quarters are intriguing, as well.
You also tour a typical plantation worker's home as well as a garden.
Well worth the time and money!
