Maki-Sushi was AWESOME!!!
We ended up at this place due to a suggestion from our resort concierge after running up to enjoy the vistas of Waimea Canyon - !!! Beware of the potholes!!! It was late (almost closing) and by most island standards, it was amazing to find this place open. Richard was our server and he was happy to take care of us. I had the Maki-Sushi and my husband had the Volcano Burger. The Sand Pie sounded interesting and we enjoyed every bite. Both of us were very happy with our selections. So much so that we actually went back, so I could enjoy the Maki-Sushi again. I had been to Da Kitchen in Kihei, Mama's Fish House on Maui, the Tasty Crust in Wailuku, the Old Lahaina Luau on Maui, the Kula Lodge on Maui, the Noodle Shop in Kapaa, the Kilauea Fish Market on Kauai, Brennecke's at Poipu Beach, Roy's in Waikoloa, the Volcano House on Hawaii, and Don Ho's on Oahu. They all had their good points, but I just did not have the need to eat at any of those places more than once. This time, we were there around 6P and ran into slow service. But, looking back...I think that is just the way the attitude is on Kauai (and for the Hawaiian islands collectively speaking). People are just laidback. Personally, I was not a big fan of this and do not really think it has any place in the food service arena, but I guess it bugged me more than other people. Carnation was our server this time and after I was asked if I wanted a refill of iced tea before I had even placed my order, I was wishing we had Richard - who was again, in quite a hurry to take care of his customers. This time my husband got the kalua pork enchiladas and enjoyed those as well. I just wish someone here on the mainland would put those fantastic maki-sushi rolls on their menus. I am not even a fan of raw tuna, but those things were PHENOMENAL! I also am not a beer connoisseur, but my husband enjoys those dark and bitter brews. Some of his favorites are Guinness, Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar, and Fat Tire. He was quite happy with the Fonz IPA (8/10) and Pakala Porter (7/10). I only wish I had tried the Calamari, but I know that I would have kept ordering the Maki-Sushi if I had a chance.
