Donatello, located on the edge of The Lanes area, serves up trattoria-style cuisine in generous portions. This large, airy restaurant has plenty of attractive greenery and is extremely popular, especially with groups of people. The menu is extensive and choosing a dish could be difficult for the indecisive. No GM foods are used and if ordering spaghetti, wholewheat or gluten free versions are available. From Sunday-Friday a splendid three course set meal is on offer at around £8, or for those with smaller appetites a two course version may be purchased. Wines range from £10-£30+ and there are also tempting cocktails, beers and soft drinks.
I've had a very bad experience at the Donatello Italian restaurant in Brighton. We took our family because we saw an advert in the local paper offering some deal. The food was okay and perhaps slightly over priced, but it was the service that was, quite frankly, appalling. It took the staff over an hour to take our order and another 40 minutes for the food to arrive (we were there for nearly three hours - twice as long I would gave though). The order wasn't correct and one of the pizzas we ordered arrived with everyone else's dessert. So what! I hear you say, all quite forgivable? perhaps they were busy? Maybe they were, but what has promoted me to post this review was they way we were treated when we came to pay. They would not honor the vouchers from the paper and were not interesting in listening to our grievances. The waiter was very aggressive and actually said that we had no right to complain and that we should pay and go and made a real scene -it was very embarrassing. I couldn't get out quickly enough. I left the restaurant feeling upset and very disappointed with the experience. This is not a experience I would wish on anyone else. This is first time I've ever reviewed a restaurant or put anything on the Internet - I guess the best thing is to vote with your feet and I'd suggest that you do the same. Don't go to Donatello in Brighton, try something else. I eat out quite a lot and there are some fantastic place in Brighton. Try Latin in the Lanes (Italian), the China garden (Chinese) or Terre a Terre (amazing Vegetarian).
