Lickey Hills Country Park
A trip to The Lickeys has been a popular for generations of Brummies. The park itself, covering 524 acres (212.055277 hectares), is a wonderful mixture of coniferous and deciduous trees, bluebells, marshes and heaths. Furthermore, because of this mix of conditions and plants there is a plethora of wildlife to be seen. Lickey Hills is a great place to learn about natural history and is a favorite day trip for schools. It is also a favorite among mountain bike riders, the highest point of the hills being Beacon Hill which reaches 297.18 meters (975 feet). The park includes an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and a bowling green. There is also a well-equipped visitor center. Lickey Hills Country Park is situated to the south-west of the city, in the Bromsgrove area.
We stayed at a hotel in the Lickeys and had the best experience - we watched a heron fishing on the lake, fed the ducks, saw an eagle hunting at close quarters - a fab time for anyone wanting to escape to the country yet still be within easy reach of the city.
Superb countryside so close to Birmingham, great for a walk anytime of year. Kids play area, visitor centre and great views and it's free. Spring would not be the same without a visit to the bluebell woods!
