Royal Watan

Description

For good, honest balti cuisine there are few better places to try than the Royal Watan. Its interior is dull and the menu what you'd expect from dozens of similar places, but there is real flair in the cooking, portions are appetite-defying and this is home to the largest naan breads in the western world. It's cheap too, with main meals coming in at less than £6 and all are recommended. The waiters are irrepressibly cheery and very accommodating. Go there again and again - you won't be disappointed.

Great Value
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/23/11
Have been visiting this Balti house for two or three years now, first went on a group visit with vegetarians amongst us, we all enjoyed the meals thoroughly and I seem to remember ebing impressed by the size and quality of teh naans. I've returned several times since, and there have been a couple of occasions where the food (fish in particular) needed more attention, but overall, the Balti really is great here and always tastes freshly made, the naan bread is by far the best I have ever tried... anywhere! Try the cheese, chilli and garlic, it is really superb. You can go for a beer at the Selly Park tavern next door, buy a cheap bottle of Red and take it next door to Watan. The service is always friendly and attentive, not too pushy. I've never had to wait long and the prices are the best I have seen in Brum, I've tried some of the more expensive Balti houses and this would compare in several areas although there could be room for improvement. Regarding the toilets... I have a rule, if a food venue cannot keep the toilets clean then watch out in the kitchen... I can assure readers that the toilets here are always impecable and I can see from a quick Google check, the City Council rates it Good in hygiene for Dec 2010.

Hated it
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/16/11
Must have gone on a wrong day, avoid wednesdays. kebabs were the frozen microwave stuff you buy from you local cash&carry. Chiken tikka was so red coloured, dry and hard looked microwaved from frozen as well. Some dry strips of chicken in a tomato based curry for kadhai chicken. Rotis were the only edible part. Avoid desi's worst food I have had for a long time, that too in Birminham

The Best Restaurant On Pershore Road
Just a quick responce to the comment made below, WAKE AND GOTO SPEC SAVERS YOU MUST HAVE GONE TO A CHEAP RESTAURANT IN STIRCHLEY, and i think the rest of the comments speak for it self, i myself have been visiting the royal watan for 4 years i use to use a restaurant in stirchley who has copied the menu but could never live upto the standards of the royal watan the food is marvelous service is marvelous and the owners take time out to have good old natter over a cup of coffee so id say 10/10 like everyone else

It's delicious!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/12/08
I've been using this restaurant since moving to the area about six years ago. I've been there with many people, and they have all enjoyed the experience, and they all agree that the food is lovely. We mainly have home deliveries now, as we prefer staying at home. The service is excellent, and the food is equally as good as when we eat in. I've tried a couple of other restaurants, but i always come back to the Royal Watan, there is no comparison.

Good Old Fashioned Balti
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/31/08
The Royal Watan has been our local balti house for a number of years. Birmingham is not shy of balti houses and the Royal Watan is one of the good ones. To put it briefly.... Unassuming, honest, local and friendly Balti house.

Altal
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/9/07
I have been going to the Royal Waton for the past 17 years. Since about 1990, during that time it has changes a lot in decor, however the food has always been consistently excellent. As is the service. I would recommend anybody going for a balt there especially to try there speciality dishes. they are all excellent. If I had anything negative to comment on it's the neon sign outside. for such an excellent restaurant, which serves such high class food, why would they stick a huge cheap looking neon sign outside? this of course is a minor niggle which should not bother most people. try it out.....you will definately go back time after time

Best ever!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/28/05
This is without a doubt the best balti I have had. I have no hesitation in recommending it. 10 out of 10 for starters, baltis and bread. The giant naans have to be seen to be believed. Enjoy.

Best curry ever
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/19/05
The emphasis at this place is entirely on the food which is excellent. It is fair to say the surroundings aren't pretty and the toilets are best kept a no-go area but the food is beyond criticism. Both starters and baltis are fantastic and great value. This is my favourite curry restaurant in the whole of the UK. When in Birmingham this is the only restaurant I go to.
