Virgen del Mar beach is about 6km to the northeast of Santander itself. An island of the same name is at one end, linked to the beach by a footbridge. The Ermita de la Virgen del Mar housing the statue of the city's patron saint is on the island. This is a peaceful strand, which covers an area of about 11000 square metre in fine golden sand. Despite the habitual quietness here, the beach has good facilities, including parking, life guards every day, showers and bins for your rubbish. The sands are cleaned daily.
