Description

This restaurant is decorated as a traditional inn, with white walls, wooden tables and brick, but instead of having hams hanging from the roof, there are barrels of cider and Leon pork. The restaurant specialises in the cuisine of northern Spain, with dishes such as bean stew, red Tolosa beans with chorizo, black pudding, bacon, chorizo cooked in cider (brought specially from Asturias), and the shoulder of suckling lamb. If you prefer fish, try the cod in parsley sauce or al pil-pil, which is very spicy. For dessert, good options include the tarta de Santiago (with almonds, egg and sugar) and yemas de Santa Teresa (little yellow cakes made from egg yolk). There's a good wine list and excellent service.

POSSIBLY THE BEST MEAL I'VE EVER HAD

Manolo's is the business - fantastic and very fresh ingredients traditionally and simply prepared Asturias-style. I've been here many times, but you'll never get bored with such variety and quality, and it's the only 'non-negotiable' reservation of any trip to an area that isn't short of great places to eat. The menu reflects what's fresh and available today (and Manolo will take you through what he thinks is the best stuff he's got in), and will always have great meat and fish dishes, as well as the terrific 'fabada asturiana' - a stew of beans and meats. Very good house wine and excellent service make this my favourite restaurant anywhere that I know. Be warned - you will definitely need to budget time for a siesta afterwards...
