Description

This award-winning French bistro serves personal creations with a base of classic French to those with expensive tastes. Blue-chip food is offered in a relaxed shopfront bistro with warm, friendly and quintessentially French flair. Par excellence dining for the sophisticated palate. Dishes include foie gras, pan-fried, served with an orange and cider sauce and a quenelle of apple sorbet, medallions of lamb served on a bed of ratatouille chopped small, polenta cooked with black olives and basil, and served with a tarragon sauce.

One of the best!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/20/09
Having lived in France for a number of years, I was a bit worried whether I'd find quality French cuisine in or around Johannesburg when I returned to the country. I was absolutely extatic after my first visit to La Madeleine. Great food, fantastic and enthusiastic service, and at a very reasonable price (compared to other French restaurants in Johannesburg). I will definately go back as often as I can.

my all time favorite restaurant
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/20/06
My annual trip to Johannesburg would not be complete without dinner at La Madeleine. There are many fine restaurants in the Santon/Jo'burg area & over the 26 years I've been going to South Africa this restaurant stands head & shoulders above the rest. Only the freshest, finest foods found that day in the markets are offered, hence the lack of a menu, the chef/owner comes to your table & recites whats on tonight, worth going for that alone, your mouth cannot fail to water! I cannot give it enough praise & would recommend it to anyone. This is truly fine dining at it's best!

Exquisite French Cuisine
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/1/06
Travelling frequently from Europe to Cape Town I always make a stop in Johannesburg/Pretoria only to visit to the restaurang La Madeleine. The food is of the same class as the best in France. The Chef has a great fantasy and knowledge in cooking. South-Africa should be proud of having such an artist in the country. Bon Apptite ! Gordon of Stockholm

Good Food
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/16/06
Its a pity the "Yahoo User from Johannesburg " is a Yahoo and more at home eating dung. I have been to La Madeleine a number of time and on visits from the UK always make this one of the place to eat. La Madeleine is one of the top resturants like Gerhard Moerdyk, Toulouse, etc.

OVER RATED & BAD
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/9/06
1.) Who serves heated oysters out of the shell with cream and spinach. It is that bad that I had to vomit them up when we got home. 2.) Duck - very average considering you can go to the Bell Pepper in Kensington for 1/3 of the price and eat this really like the French do. 3.) The French chef (possibly owner) speaks such poor English that you have no idea what dish he is speaking about. How about printing the menu - you can do that even yourself these days. 4.) It is time the chef travelled to France and Australia and modernise himself. He is living in the past.
