Peranakan food is essentially a blend of ingredients borrowed from Chinese and Malay dishes, and this fusion is said to be the best of all Singapore cuisines. Dishes like Beef Rendang, Udang Sambal (chilli prawns) or Curry Chicken are cheap and tasty. Alcoholic beverages are not served. Study the nostalgic pictures of the Peranakans as traditional music entertains. However, with the mild air conditioning, it may get a little warm and stuffy sometimes. Chef Jolly Wee, a Peranakan known to run cooking classes, manages the restaurant.
Why is it that the best Peranakan restaurants are all on the East Coast? I'm not sure, but this place in Joo Chiat is definitely among the best.
Very authentic Peranakan, with a lively atmosphere and always very busy. This is one of my favorite places alongside Peranakan Inn on East Coast Road.
This is a typical family style restaurant. Nothing pretentious here but the food will grab your attention as Nonya cuisine is generally full of hot spices and this place has lived up to that reputation. One of the best dishes on the menu is the curry assam fish head that is enough for four as it is served with veggies nad a rich gravy. We also enjoyed the otak. Something like a cabbage roll with fish meat inside and cooked in laksa gravy, it was very good. Finish with pulot hitam for dessert and when you get the bill you will be pleasantly surprised.
