A Grand Day Out at a fantastic museum
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/27/11
The best day out of my visit to New Zealand. 250 beautifully presented cars, and motorcycles from around the world are displayed in a well lit purpose built museum of the highest standard. Exhibits range from the oldest car in New Zealand, an 1895 Benz, to an Aerial Atom.
Highlights include a 1936 Tatra77 rear engined air-cooled V8, A gangster's Cadillac with bullet holes, Rolls Royce Silver Ghost and Bugatti racer rolling chassis, and an immaculate Brough Superior motorcycle and sidecar with an Austin 7 engine and twin rear wheels!
I particularly liked the 3-car pit, where I was able to compare a 1909 White steamcar, a DAF 44 with Variomatic transmission and a 1909 International Highwheeler with a
forced air cooled flat twin.
My only criticism would be that some exhibits are closely packed and cannot be seen to best advantage.
We were there until closing time... make sure you come early.
