Southward Car Museum

Description

A short drive up Wellington's lovely "Gold coast", you will find the Southward Car Museum housing the largest collection of cars and motorbikes in New Zealand. Once the largest private collection of cars, the Southwards car museum holds more than 200 cars and 125 motorbikes. With cars dating from an early (1890s) Benz you will find a collection that will enthrall and intrigue. Timings vary, so check website for schedules.

A Grand Day Out at a fantastic museum
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/27/11
The best day out of my visit to New Zealand. 250 beautifully presented cars, and motorcycles from around the world are displayed in a well lit purpose built museum of the highest standard. Exhibits range from the oldest car in New Zealand, an 1895 Benz, to an Aerial Atom. Highlights include a 1936 Tatra77 rear engined air-cooled V8, A gangster's Cadillac with bullet holes, Rolls Royce Silver Ghost and Bugatti racer rolling chassis, and an immaculate Brough Superior motorcycle and sidecar with an Austin 7 engine and twin rear wheels! I particularly liked the 3-car pit, where I was able to compare a 1909 White steamcar, a DAF 44 with Variomatic transmission and a 1909 International Highwheeler with a forced air cooled flat twin. My only criticism would be that some exhibits are closely packed and cannot be seen to best advantage. We were there until closing time... make sure you come early.

The very best collection of car I have ever seen
By Graham and Liz, 9/14/08
While on holiday in New Zealand, my wife Liz and myself came accross Southward Car Museum by accident. We decided to have a look. WOW what a fantastic place, we were there for about 4hrs. As we were looking at the cars all I could say was I have had one of those and one of those and one of those. It was a trip down memory lane for me, we agree that it was the very best well spent money we had spent in New Zealand. WHY is it not better advertised to the tourists. Thank you to every one concerned in the running and up keep of the cars and building. You are all doing a fantastic job. See you all again in 2009.

Tourist in Newzealand
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/7/08
In London we have Harrods as a tourist attraction, in New Zealand you have Southward Car Museum. Why do people not know this? It made our trip to New Zealand worthwhile. I wish I had arrived earlier and been able to meet Sir Len Southward.

A must see when you go to NZ!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/15/07
I've been to NZ twice and on both trips I've gone out of my way to visit the Southward Car museum. The collection of cars there is very interesting and impressive. My wife even enjoyed it (and we were on our honeymoon!).

Motoring Heaven
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/26/07
Without doubt, one of the finest collection of "working" motor vehicles from the past to the present. Discovered it by accident and could have easily stayed a whole day if not for timings and a wife who is not a motoring nutcase. Treasures include an 1895 Benz, Maserati 250F, Delorean (DMC) to a range of vintage motor cycles. Pure heaven. Highly recommended to all

World class car museum
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/13/05
This museum, which is mainly vintage cars, but includes some other interesting transport options, and an ex-cinema organ in a small theatre, is of international standard. Its large display area houses a magnificent collection, many of the items having been obtained before world prices took off. It is housed in a specially built museum building in park land at Paraparaumu, about 40 minutes by rail or car (except in peak hours) out of central Wellington. Its a short taxi trip from the rail station. There is ample parking and a cafe.
