Somes Island, known as Matiu in Maori, is accessible by Ferry. It is the largest of the three islands anchored in the inner harbor and certainly the most interesting geologically and historically. Amongst the flourishing predator-free forest, remains of the original pa site, war fortifications and buildings from its time as a quarantine station are evident.
If you dont want to spend alot of money, love seeing all kinds of critters and have a few hours on your hands; i couldnt recommend a better way to spend it!
Somes Island has breath taking views and is easy walking. In the four times i have been there i have seen skinks, kaka's, fantails, giant wetas, ground wetas, and best of all, little blue penguins.
I look forward to seeing the toatara's and gekos- and the soon to be realesed robins.
we Woke up at like 6:45 i can't remeber the time the feiry lift but when we got there we had to walk every where and i said"i dont want to walk"but after a while it was so much we had lunch at the top by the look out after that we saw heaps of animal i will never foget that day!
good place to visit just for a 3hours. just take a round and stay some places to see robin and dalbin. little different experience. children and Adult( who is not interest to see some rare species) get bored.
