Chocolate Fish Cafe

Description

This famously relaxed cafe, on the coast road near the suburb of Seatoun, is one of Wellington's best-kept secrets. It is perfect on a weekday when the sun is shining and the winds calm. The excellent coffee, expansive sea views and wholesome food could only be improved by good company. Tables are littered al fresco on both sides of the road and there is a cosy indoor eating area. Great views, simple snacks, good coffee and ice cream are specialities.

Do not waste your time or money
By ,
This was my worst experience eating in NZ. All they had to offer was sandwiches, no sides. I ordered three and it cost me $40. My family and I waited more than 45 minutes for three small sandwiches. The portions were skimpy. The slow, slow staff were at least friendly - when they ever passed by. It was a huge waste of money and time. I could have easily gone many other places for just as poor quality food and spent much less time and money. If you are a tourist to Wellington, avoid this place like the plague.

Who needs food and drink?
By ,
Just to sit at the tables and watch the sea, the ferries passing, and watch and listen to the tourists drinking in the atmosphere and the beautiful position is worth five stars before you even think about the tasty food and drink. And don't forget the amazing artwork. A real gem of a place.

Not for the truly hungry!
By ,
Thought we'd take a couple of friends from Auckland to this reputable cafe to find that it was not what we expected. - Miserly portions - Over priced meals - Not child friendly (Unless of course you take them across the road to the beach out of eyshot) Have to say that I have experienced the "Hype" and will not be returning, it was extremely disappointing and will not be recommending this to anyone anytime soon - Oh by the way, they will be closing down soon, so maybe that was behind their get every cent from you ASAP attitude! Apparently this was once THE place to be, unfortunately it is no longer the case! Service was Ok, the coffee average and the atmosphere was over crowded - nice if you like to be part of sardine city! Scathing as my review is, I felt it only necessary to write as our friends from Auckland were laughing, we left for fear of any further embarrassment.

Quick Lunch
By ,
We recently visited the cafe on recommendation from my in laws. We popped in for a bite to eat and I was very impressed by the whole set up. Everything is informal with wonderful artwork all over the furniture. The service is professional and the food is exceptional. Member of staff brought a toy box over for our little boy without being asked. Lovely staff!!! Will definately visit on our next trip to NZ. Dene and Caroline Trickett Barnsley, England

Wonderful Relaxation Spot
By ,
Visited Wellington back in October 2004, and even though it was a bit cool, gray and chilly most of the time we were there, me and my friends visited the Fish at least 5 times in the week and a half there (despite how busy the place always was). The ice cream and coffee are great, and when the sun is out, the view and outdoor seating area cannot be beaten. Didn't get a chance to try the real food there, but if you're looking for a great place to grab a cone and a beautiful view of the water, look no further.

No food
By ,
Admittedly it was busy when we arrived and we were told our order (lunch for three) would take about half an hour. After 40 minutes I went to ask someone how our order was going - confusion - followed by someone coming out to say it had got lost. It would be 5 - 10 minutes; sadly not time we had to wait. Our gripe was at no time was the word 'sorry' used or was their any feeling of concern that we were going away hungry. We had already paid and our money was returned quickly but just with a shrug of the shoulders.
