Chez Papa French Bistro
Popular with Singaporeans on weekend trips, this venue employs a French chef to prepare authentic French-style cuisine. A passable attempt to look Mediterranean results in the interiors dressing up in warm lighting, wrought-iron chairs and matching tables, and checked tablecloths. The menu is predominantly French with a tad of Mediterranean influence. A typical full-course meal may include Nicoise salad, tomato soup, an entree, sirloin steak, Prawn Provencale or fillet of fish and dessert. Refreshments include a small wine selection, beer, hot and cold beverages and soft drinks.
I travelled from Singapore to Chez Papa in JB for a meal as it was ranked the no.1. restaurant at trip advisor. I might have arrived a bit too early, at 6p.m. the restaurant was vacant, and the waiters were turning on the music and the lights while I was in the middle of my meal. When I left there were a few more patrons.
The restaurant is charming. Cozy and carefree French. Stepping into the restaurant is like being transformed into another world immediately. Considering the noisy traffic and dust outside, the feeling is almost surreal. The staff were shy, but warm and delightful. It's just that the food....
The bread was soft, fluffy and crunchy at the right places. I wished I had more, but I didn't, as I thought that I should leave space for the food that was to come...unfortunately
I figured that some burnt bits in the onion soup was ok, but...the cheese floating in the soup was so charred, that the soup left a smoky, bitter aftertaste.
The fillet mignon was a generous portion of beef, so generous and thick...that there's nothing dainty about eating it. My fingers ached from trying to slice through the meat, which might have been helped if the cutlery were sharper. The accompanying sauce and vegetables were ok.
In the end I figured that my meal might have been cooked by someone other than the celebrated chef, the restaurant felt unprepared for my early patronage, even though...they were supposed to start business at 6p.m.
Or maybe the restaurant was meant to be a good place for that candlelight dinner with that special someone, sipping vintage wine in a very pretty setting...
Just not for the food.
There are not many bars to go to in JB like Chez Papa Wine Bar. This place has the nicest bar crowd! Everyone is so friendly and everyone will talk to everyone else! Of course there is a great wine list and the drinks are very good value. If you haven't been here, you should visit soon!
I never miss an opportunity to have foie gras. There are quite a few French restaurants in Singapore that have it, but none taste as fantastic as the one I had here at Chez Papa. Thank you Chef Dominique!
We live in JB but have never been to this place that we have passed many times. Why we waited so long, we don't know!
The escargots were excellent, exactly how it taste if you went to France. My daughter said it was the best lamb cutlets she has ever eaten and she didn't hesitate to use her fingers.
My husband was so impressed with the wine list and the staff knowledge.
The French Chef and staff were so friendly.
We'll definitely be back.

This is truly a charming little bistro and I was very surprised to find it in a town like Johor Bahru. The foie gras prepared by chef Dominique Muller is melt in your mouth wonderful better than any I've had in San Francisco. My daughter who's six going on sixteen says the chocolate mousse is to die for. The wine room next door is so warm and cozy and the wine list is truly incredible. It was simply a pleasure dining and wining there. A plus!
Located on the second level of a remodelled barge moored permanently to the shores of the JB Duty Free Zone,
this is a novel restaurant in which to enjoy Chinese style seafood. Decorated in traditional colours and with the ...
