Ho Phra Keo
This temple was built in A.D.1565 by King Xaisetathirat making it one of the oldest temples in Vientiane and therefore no longer an active place of worship. Surrounding the temple and its exquisitely kept gardens are 10 staircases, each intricately and symmetrically carved in the shape of dragons, adding to the distinct structure and design. Inside is a museum housing ancient statues and materials from around the country but, unfortunately for many tourists, all explanations are in Lao.
This is a unique and elegant temple in Vientiane. Its old architecture, charm and natural look make it more fascinated than the artificial and colorful Wat Phra Keaw in Bangkok. You'll find that Ho Phrakeo is a quiet, dignified stone building rich with carvings and surrounded by simple, yet lush landscaping of native flowers and trees. There is an overlying feeling of serenity and quiet to the temple grounds that makes it an oasis in the middle of the city of Vientiane.
As a side note, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha has a Disney-ish feel to it, with glittering buildings in all different styles, topiaries, and swarms of pushy tourists. Make sure you take a big dose of patience and a bottle of water when you go visit that one.
Set amidst plants galore, this spacious establishment caters to all. The food garden serves both international and Lao specialties from
an extensive and tasty menu. The open air bar stocks draught and bottled beer, wines, liquors and ample supplies ...
The focal point of downtown Vientiane is Nam Phu Fountain. It has been a part of the Vientiane 'picture postcard'
setting for around 100 years. The park around the fountain is currently being refurbished but one can still enjoy ...
This historic statue is said to be built on the cave of a dormant seven headed dragon which rose to
the rescue of the Vientiane population in the 1828 war with Thailand. Now standing guard over the town's center, ...
