Ocho Rios Baptist Church, Ocho Rios

This church like the mythical bird the phoenix, has risen from adversity and has refused to die. Although the present church is a modern structure, its history is intricately twined with the 171 years history of the Baptist movement in Ocho Rios. It has its genesis with a 'freelance' preacher known as Mrs. Russell. An official Baptist presence began in 1827. The present church is a large concrete structure with many windows to aid in cooling the building. There is a large cross set above the door—its light beckons like a beacon in the night. The interior is large and has that air of tranquility so common in older churches. At present its congregation numbers about 346.
