Spanish Town Cast Iron Bridge
Built in 1801, this stately bridge stretches across the Rio Cobre River. The bridge is reputed to be the oldest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. The abutment (the supporting structure) is made of cut stone. The bridge itself is cast iron, hence the name. The intricately carved iron is painted black. Plans are being developed to repair and return this national treasure to its former glory. The fact that it is still being used today is a testament to its builders. Pedestrians in the area use it daily though it is closed to vehicular traffic.
