The Ruins Restaurant

Description

A former sugar mill built in the 1800s; this restaurant boasts waterfalls and a covered bridge as part of its decor. This popular restaurant is also one of Ocho Rios' best-known attractions. The main dining area is in back, with its raised wooden deck encased by pools of water and vegetation growing on the walls. Soft lights and paper lanterns lead you down the path within the dining room, which is often filled with hungry diners in awe of their eco-environs. On the menu you'll find typical Chinese fare, Jamaican options as well as an extensive list of vegetarian dishes.

Amazing!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/19/07
A waterfall, and gardens to walk through, and wildlife while you eat? Wow, amazing place, and great food. You can walk up, around and over top of the waterfall. I have never seen anything like it in the US. I would definitely go back, and recommend to everyone to go.

Great food with romantic setting
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/27/07
If you are into seafood and curry dishes this is a great restaurant you don't want to miss. It has a very romantic setting with two water falls right inside the courtyard where you dine. Our family was staying at an all inclusive 5 star resort in Ocho Rio. One day we ventured out to the Dunns Falls and stopped over at the Ruins Restaurant for a quick buffet lunch. We found the curry chicken and jerky BBQ surprising good, and decided to return for dinner another night, requesting a table right besides the falls. Romance filled the air and it was very relaxing (and surprisingly no mosquito - I am usually the de facto target). We ordered surf and turf and some curry dishes. The lobster was prepared in a sauce that was very tasty. Be sure to treat yourself with their lobster bisque. The owner came over for a chat and we took pictures together. We still owe them the pictures (shame). After dinner we took a walk to the top of the falls. I was told that that area alone grew the most variety of ferns on earth. I am not a botanist so I cannot confirm this claim so go see for yourself. P.S. ....there is a good size banquet hall with a dance floor. If you plan on an event, do bring your dancing shoes. There is also a large gazebo in case it rains, but who cares.

Ideal for a wedding
By Latoyah, 4/1/07
I visited the resturant on my trip last year. Absolutely everything about the place was enchanting. The way it's constructed around the water fall makes it unique and the food is cheap but of such a high standard it was definetly a highlight of my trip. My friend intends to have her wedding there this year in the fall and i couldn't think of anywhere more perfect. It is a perfect blend of jamaican/chinese decor & food also nature & mod cons it really is A class and needs to be seen in person because pictures don't do it any justice.

Cockroach in Coffee
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/23/07
Great atmosphere, although very noisy because of the falls. Lousy service, expensive, and to top it off, a cockroach was poured into our after dinner coffee. Don't go there to eat, but it is worth seeing it (possibly getting a drink).

Exquisite Dining
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/14/06
I first ate at the Ruin's 1985 and it remains my most favorite place to dine in Jamaica. The food is exquisite and the service and presentation is impeccable. To dine in front of the falls, during the day or evening, is an experience one will never forget as it is beautiful and romantic! My sincerest thanks goes out to Mr. Hendrickson and his staff for providing such a wonderful setting and dining experience for myself and family.

Thank you
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/9/06
Thank you all at the Ruins for making my wedding truly remarkable. I was hesitant at first I am so glade that I used the Ruins. My wedding could not have been more perfect. The flowers and decoration was like a ferry tale. Complemented with the food which I still get complements from my gust. It is the best chicken and fish I have ever had and the soup My husband still talk about it, its the best. We will defiantly be back for our Anniversary in November. Special Thanks to a wonderful young lady Ms. Anita Gim-chen who helped us throw all our planning. Thank you for being so help full, I know you came out of your way in helping us, and we truly appreciate it. When we are heading back to Jamaica we will defiantly give you a call and drop by for lunch. I can't get over the food It was so GOOOOd.... Thanks a million

Don't plan on getting your money's worth
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/23/05
Although this is a very beautiful restaurant it is not suitable for large groups. The set menu options are not satisfactory by any means. The portions are small and served either family style or buffet style. They tack on additional for individual portions, even if it is a set menu. The dessert, which was ridiculous for the amount of money we spent, was day-old, unripe fruit, in very small portions. No coffee, tea or any other after dinner drink was offered. The two hour open bar service we purchased was so badly run that the first drink did not touch down on our table until 45 minutes AFTER we sat down. Almost $1600 later our guests left hungry and sober, which in my opinion is not how you want to see that money spent. Needless to say we were suckered by this restaurant and they fall into that sad category of places that overcharge because of the scenery. There are far better places to spend your money in Jamaica and if you want to see the falls, go to the actual park during the day and have delicious jerk chicken and red stripe on the beach. I only wish someone had warned us before this dreadful experience.
