Attractive tablecloths and photographs of the Palio on the walls give this tavern a typical air. The cooking is simple with good pici ai porcini (fresh pasta and mushrooms), a large range of meats, and home-made desserts. Plenty of local wine of course. It is to be found just after Porta Camollia in the street of the same name. Next door, the shop belonging to the same owner has many typical products you can try at home.
I found La Piana to be the best restaurant in Siena. We ate there at least once a week and more often not twice. It is family owned and the food could not be better. We were dining among the locals at lunch and dinner. the experience is almost as good as the food.
Easily my favorite spot for a great bowls of pasta and a bottle of wine.
I agree completly with Todd. I studied in Siena for three months and dined at La Piana almost weekly once it was introduced to me by some of my classmates (one was named Todd, hmm..).
I ate a lot of pasta while in Italy and have dined at just about every restaruant in North Beach (San Francisco) and the Pici ala Rustica at La Piana is simply the greatest pasta dish that I have ever had. The Ravioli ala Piana is excellent as well and the Bruschetta is amazing.
If you only have one meal in Siena, have it at La Piana.
It has been about 6 years since I have eaten here, but this little restaurant offered fantastic food at moderate prices. My personal favorites were Pici ala Rustica, bisteca con rosmario and truffle oil. This place deserves more attention than it receives because it is just a little off the main traffic of town where most of the other places catering to mainstream tourism are noticed. Try the Pici ala rustica and tell me if it is not the most wonderful and interesting pasta dish you have had in a long time.
