Guido Maria Conforti, the bishop of Parma, wanted to build an ambitious project to which missionaries could bring their testimonies of specific cultures from far off lands and preserve them to educate future missionaries. The collection has been notably enriched by donations from China, Oceania, Africa, Pakistan, Japan and Latin America. On display are vases, mirrors, paintings and statues from the 11th Century BCE to the 13th Century. There are ceramics such as two Pan Shan vases from 3000 BCE and a terracotta pot with a turtle and a snake from 200 CE. The porcelain is particularly precious, covering the period of the last millennium from the Hu-Suan-Te era (1426-35) to the Kang-Shi era (1662-1722). Amongst the paintings are various portraits and works by the painter Huang Ch'uan who lived before the year 1000 CE and there are also numerous landscapes, flowers and birds.
