My favorite restaurant in Bologna
By ,
Start with the cubes of mortadella and parmigiano, then order the chicken breast with their special sauce made of reduced aceto balsamico. OH! SO good! You'll find pictures of famous singers and fighters on the walls, as well. The hosts are as incredible as the food. I lived in Bologna for 13 years, and this is my favorite restaurant. I had my engagement party there. Don't miss this restaurant when you visit Bologna!

I will never go back!

The waiter was nice. The food was nothing special. Suddenly Liberace (or a distant relative) started playing the piano so loud that all conversation had to stop! I got headache and we fled...

You cannot eat worse in Italy...
By ,
We (my mother, my brother and me) went to Bologna last week and had lunch / dinner in a couple of good restaurants. On our last evening we wanted to eat extraordinarily good and so we decided to follow your recommendations and go to Donatello. Do not make this mistake! We paid 66 € for pasta and one piece of meat. The pasta (tortellini con burro e salvia, tortellini con rucola e noce) simply tasted awful, it was very greasy and far from spicy. Plus, there was almost no difference between the two dishes. Both were over and over covered with a white, slimy sauce (why was there a white sauce if the tortelli were supposed to be "con burro and salvia"???). The cotoletta looked like a bloody piece of brain on the plate. And yes, we like them cotolette medium. Moreover, we drank a "small bottle" (like the ones you will find in every Italian supermarket at the bottom of the shelves) of white wine, which we had to drink out of water glasses. Noone offered us the appropriate wine glasses. the typical bread you will find on the table of every Italian restaurant resembled styrofoam. We went home hungry and by now we feel tricked by the "typical italian" ambiance. Indeed, we have never ever eaten worse. PS: I couldn't sleep that night as my stomach hurt so bad PPS: If you should nevertheless go there, be prepared - you will need whisky afterwards

My favorite restaurant in Bologna
By ,
I lived for 16 years in Bologna and Ristorante Donatello is, in my opinion, the best restaurant in a city of fabulous restaurants. Starting with the "antipasto" of cubed mortadella right up to the desert and grappa, the food is fabulous, the ambiance beautiful, and the owners and wait staff welcoming. Don't miss the chicken breast in a sauce made with cream and aceto balsamico. I took a group of students there and they even came up with a fabulous meal for the student who was vegan. I have celiac sprue and they know how to cook for that, too. I even had my engagement dinner here! A great meal, a great value, not to be missed.

Home away from home
By ,
I used to regularly travel to Bologna on business, and Ristorante Donatello was my home away from home. If you walked by, and looked in, you might just walk on. It looks like any other mid-sized eatery, but the food and service distinguish it. Don't miss the risotto with porcini, or their outstanding pasta bolognese. A wonderful, unassuming place for a meal and conversation.

#1 experience of my another tour of Italy (Tuscany included)
By ,
Exclusive welcoming atmosphere, plesure for taste buds. Excellent choice of the food matching wine (Lumbrusco in our case). Uncomparable to any other Italian cousine we've tried in years. Will definitely go back and recommend to friends.

The best restaurant in Bologna
By ,
I took a college group of 20 to Donatello; I lived in Bologna for 13 years and I knew how great it was. The students are still talking about the food, the great service and the wonderful time they had. In fact, we'll be returning next year to Bologna so that we can visit the restaurant again!

Going back for a weekend just to eat here!
By ,
If you are in Bologna, do not make the mistake of missing out a visit here. The food is traditional Italian, the service handled by people who love food and want you to enjoy the experience. The food is sensibly priced allowing you to have the full 3 course Italian experience. (Antipasto, pasta and meat or fish) without feeling bloated. Vegetarians are also catered for without being made to feel an inconvenience. Go!
