Oooh . . . their scones!
The inside of the "Purple Heather" is a plush red--with lots of wood, high ceilings and low light. We had gone looking for our customary late-afternoon pick-me-up of tea and scones, and one lady in the street directed us to the "Heather." (Our guidebooks listed it, too.) Hurrying over before it closed (since it operates only during daytime hours), we found the service rather chilly and indifferent. But the scones did not disappoint! Two little gems--crisp on the outside, tender within. Served hot with whipped cream and tart raspberry jam, they were textbook perfection, in a memorable setting.
