Leineschloß
Description
The Leineschloß (Leine Castle) was built in 1637-1640 by Duke Georg Wilhelm of Calenberg, right on the bank of the Leine. Having been built in the old town, the castle never really had enough room, but after the architect Friedrich Laves made some changes, the Schloß acquired a more "courtly" appearance. The winter garden and columns are a testament to the influence the Laves exerted on the design of the castle. Completely destroyed during the Second World War, the Leine Castle was rebuilt in 1952-62 to house the lower chamber of the parliament of Lower Saxony. Please call for open hours.
