The location of the Myllysaari museum saw the opening ceremonies of the first paper factory in the Valkeakoski area in 1872. It is thus hardly a surprise that one of the main objectives of the museum complex is to depict the history of the Finnish paper industry. The main building houses the Paper Product Museum, which focuses on the development of paper production methods from seventeenth-century paper mills to the recycling principles of today. The conversion of wood into paper and its further processing into various products has changed enormously since the first factories. Water mills dating from the Middle Ages have been turned into factories, and the wilderness into a bustling industrial town.
