Its inhabitants had no choice but to keep, their sumptuous belongings, including wooden balustrades, stylish furniture and the elegant architecture of their homes. Touring the city today is a journey back on 19th century paved cobble stone streets to glimpse the physiognomy from the 18th century in its buildings. Restoration work has further pronounced this time warp by repairing the murals, which embellished palaces and mansions.
