Velvet Glove (The)
This is one of the city's finest restaurants located in one of its nicest hotels. It has been rated as one of Canada's top 100 restaurants by En Route Magazine. The lamb entree is recommended, along with the soup, salad and pate that comes with the meal. The wine list is substantial and is enjoyed by the business and professional clientele that frequent the dining room. A dress code is in effect, so wear appropriate clothing.
I was a fan of LVG, till they got a young hotshot chef. After my order was placed, apps came ot 30 min. Above average. Mains took an hour and the steak(med rare), came out med well. And the desserts, while had phenominal presentation, also took way too long.
Now that same hotshot chef is pulling the same stunts at Velvet Glove.
For a menu that is coast to coast canadian, it more than leans towards French Cuisine-French Onion Soup, Escargot, Pates, Rilets, Steak Poivere. And still takes forever to come out. But unlike at LVG, they came out cold.
And for a dead time of year, Slow-Cold Food is completely unacceptable.
This four diamond restaurant has certainly earned its rating. We had the tableside Bison and it was delicious. Their dessert menu was very good too. We settled for the Bananas Foster, which was recommended by one of my colleagues.
The Harpist adds a touch of elegance to the restaurant.
Overall all of us had a great dining experience. Next time I am in Winnipeg, I will definitely head here.
A fine place for the special dinner. A standard corkage fee means that fine bottles are a better deal here than anywhere else in the city.
A place where you can get in and out before the theatre or linger over a four-course meal.
Overall it was an enjoyable atomosphere. They have a live harp player, and the mood is set well. Also the chef, actually came out and delivered my meal, and I was constantly being pampered by the waiter (maybe I look rich or something). Otherwise the food is fairly expensive, from what I remember, the meals started near 30$ but definately worth the purchase.
Byron Cooke converted this once tiny bakery and turned it into a cheeky little club with a Caribbean motif. The
marquee says restaurant, but it is much more: his cabaret license allows him to stay open later than most ...
