How it got it's name

Willism must have been the drunken sailor, but not named 'Jim' or 'Gem'
The Gem Cellar got it's name because the jeweller who started the business was looking for premises in that block of Hamilton and that was the only place he could find that was affordable. It was empty, dark, dirty, damp, just an unused storage room and only the showroom part of the present shop. The jeweller, also a boatbuilder, sailor, cabinet maker and teacher put in flooring, plumbing, electrics and generally fixed the place up and opened for business in September 1976. He called it the 'Gem Cellar', because he was a designer, maker and seller of gems and because it is a cellar. Within six months he had taken on a trainee and a part time sales person. Within two years of stting up the business, the room that is now the workshop was taken on and the whole lot re designed and re furbished. Extra staff joined, both trained from England and Canada and trainees from Bermuda. One of those was Chet. Trott, who now owns and runs the company. The company was built on good service and quality. How do I know? I started the company. Brian
