Matt's Big Breakfast
Matt's Big Breakfast has been covered time and time again by local publications and foodies, elevating this downtown Phoenix diner to legendary status. The uncompromising quality of the ingredients is just the start with spot-on technique and an unchanging menu only adding to what makes this place one of the best for breakfast. The cooks at Matt's whip up perfect eggs, griddlecakes and more hearty mains through the day. A lunch menu is available during the second half of service, although the focus is always placed on the morning fare. Complementary coffee refills top off the appeal of Matt's, a Phoenix highlight that can't be missed.
I finally rode my beach cruiser down to this place to check it out because I love finding new places to eat around Central Phoenix. The food is decent, but I don't think it lives up to how great people make it out to be. It is way over-priced for what they offer and it fell way below my expectations. There are way better places you can find that are much more worth the wait.
We first saw Matt's Big Breakfast on Diners, Drive Ins & Dives. This place was one of the highlights of our annual trip to Phoenix for Spring Training this year. The waffle was light and fluffy and the homefries (with onions & rosemary) are amazing! Don't forget the toast! The breads and jams they use are delicious. Get in line! You won't be dissappointed.
Finally went to Matt's. It's sooo busy. If you're in a rush and don't want to wait for 30.. 40.. 45??? minutes or more ---this is NOT the place for you. But, If you do wait you'll find the food is great and the prices aren't too bad. Everythings fresh, organic and straight forward. I had the pancakes and my husband had the bacon and eggs something. The pancakes were the best pancakes I've ever tasted. I'm serious. They were thick, fluffy and pretty big in size. I didn't like the syrup, though (which is a small thing, unless you pour it all over your pancakes). Anyhow, the people are friendly and the service is good. I'll definitely go back.
But next time it's ALL about take-out!
I love this place....it's always busy. Yeah, sometime you're gonna have to wait.....and wait some more. But I'd say it's so worth it. I don't know how many sq. ft the building is, but it's small, nice and friendly. I hope they never change it. The food is awesome, the service is as good as it can get, and I love the location, cause it's only 5 min from my place =). It's got yellow and orange everywhere....I love it! YOU NEED TO GO, but go early =)
I had the opportunity to dine at this hidden gem when visiting The Farmers Market on a Saturday morning. There is a traditional waiting list that goes very fast and the regulars join in the wait.
I enjoyed the veggie omelette. Matt is down to earth and friendly. I even was allowed to enter the kitchen to take a look. The cooks are busy busy busy.
Met a prospective new client for breakfast there and was absolutely tickled by the experience. The only detraction was the building was smallish, the decor was not dazzling and the echo was deafening inside - an outside venue would have made it a six star experience.
When the food did come, it was extraordinary - fluffy scrambled eggs, thick cut bacon, perfectly seasoned, and rosemary-seasoned potatoes that were perfect. The toast was thick, grainy - just the way I like it and pre-buttered with a chutney-like jam that was tasty beyond belief.
Highly recommended for anyone who loves a hearty breakfast.
