If you thought Wellington was windy, consider taking the long, but rewarding trip out to the far south-eastern coast of the Wairarapa and the wind-swept bays of Cape Palliser. Climb the 250 steps to the lighthouse for 360 degree views if you dare! The North Island's largest breeding seal colony is situated below. Do not get too close as they move fast and have been known to bite. Do not miss the quirky fishing village of Ngawi with its houses nestling under the cliffs and clinging to the fast disintegrating seashore.
I love the coastal drive to Cape Palliser. It is stunning and peaceful, although the last few kms are on unsealed road.
We saw quite a few seals and the view is picture-postcard perfect.
Ran out of time and did not go to the Light-house but it will be something to go back to the next time we drive there.
Overall, well worth your time. Bring video and camera to take back some great photos (especially on a sunny day where the sky is blue and pretty).
This is one of the really special spot in NZ. The views are just amazing from the light house. There are seals along the beach all year round. It is a long drive 1.5 hrs from Martinborough, but worth it. Stop off at the Lake Ferry Hotel on the way, or on the way back for a drink and bite to eat.
Great place, great views from light house. Coatline looks amazing all year round. There are loads of seals here too. Lake Ferry is worth a visit on your way through too. You will drive past the Pinnicle too. This is a great place too and was used in the Lord of the Rings, Return of the King.
