Philbrook Museum of Art
Formerly a private mansion, the Villa Philbrook near downtown Tulsa was donated by its residents more than 50 years ago for use as an art museum. Besides hosting special temporary exhibits throughout the year, this massive structure holds thousands of permanent exhibits from European, American, Asian, African and Native American artists. Built in the Italian villa style, the house itself is a work of art. Going through its many rooms gives one the feel of viewing someone's personal art collection. In addition to the museum itself, the Philbrook also has acres of beautiful gardens, which are open to the public, a lecture theater, restaurant and gift shop. Admission rates vary.
It was a great experience to see such lovely collection of art from different cultures and heritage. The native american furniture and other artefacts were interesting and very well maintained.A visit to Philbrook museum is a must when in Tulsa.
i went here on a field trip with my daughters class........and i was so surprised on how beautiful this place is. and how nice everyone was. i will defiantly have to go back to actually enjoy myself more. i fell in love with it instantly. you should go. so much to learn and see..........just beautiful.
Our day at the Philbrook was a highlight of our trip to Tulsa. It is in a beautiful neighborhood. Be sure to check out the Native American and Western collections. Just the Native American blankets, with their intricate and beautiful stitching, are worth the whole trip. Be sure to lunch at the Philbrook. The fare is reasonably priced, and flavored just right. The turkey sandwich with avocado was perfection. Although the European collections do not seem to rise to the levels of the American collections, a trip to the Philbrook is a day very well spent.
Philbrook has it all. It has great exhibits with standard and changing art galleries. The architecture of the home is beautiful. And the gardens are gorgeous and a wonderful place to relax or do homework.
This is one of Tulsa's hidden treasures! Every time I go to the Philbrook I learn something new and have a tremendous time. It's the perfect place to visit on a Saturday afternoon or even a Monday morning.
This is a great place to wander and lose yourself. The building and gardens are lovely (and uncrowded) and the collections, although not overwhelming, have some beautiful pieces.
The curators seem to have concentrated on small collections of different genres, rather than concentrating on one period or style, as a lot of smaller museums do. Their recent exhibit on film as found art was really well done and intriguing.
The restaurant is a great place to sit and look out on the gardens and sculpture and pretend to be cultured while noshing on a good, if limited, menu.
