Newk's Cafe Express, Oxford

Delicious!

The same founders of McAlister's started Newk's as well. Newk's isn't meant to be a 5 star restaurant; however, it certainly has it's place. It's a nice place to grab an healthy lunch. It's also a great place to grab a quick bite at night. It sure beats Applebee's, Chili's and the like. The food is fresh, unlike other restaurants in the same price range. The menu has a nice variety. My favorites are the Ceasar Salad, the Newk's Favorite Salad, the soups, and The Wreck sandwich. Their pizzas are also quite popular. Their cakes are out of this world. The pineapple is my favorite, followed by the strawberry. Newk's is a novel concept, in my opinion, at least in our area. The food is actually fresh, not frozen. Many times the food served at places that are similar in price range is frozen and reheated. Newk's is also different in that they blend full service with self service. You order your meal and then sit down at your table. While you wait for your order to arrive at your table, you get a cup for your drink and have access to the drink fountain, so your cup is always full. You can even take it with you when you go. It's an upscale cafe. It's not budget priced, but it's not high priced either. Newk's also has a quick carry out space. There is a cooler stocked with fresh sandwiches and salads and you can grab, pay, and go. I've used the carry out stand more than once. I say Newk's is going to be a winner. I've been in business long enough to know, and so have the founders of Newk's. If you go to the Newk's in Oxford, expect a crowd, but no worries, you'll get a seat as they have lots of tables. The crowds are especially large on a football game day, when the students first return for the semester, and on a basketball night. It's that good. Revised 10-13-07 Not sure what's going on at Newk's, but lately it hasn't been so great. Only have had pizza lately, but it was almost inedible. Next time, I will try a salad again. Hopefully it won't disappoint. I'm lowering my rating to 3 stars. Not happy to do it either.

Better than MCallister's and a little different than Oby's. Great environment, plenty of help and good service. My fav new place.

Food was decent, but nothing special about this place.
