This square in the center of the Hanover City is often refered to as the heart of the town. The square takes its name from an old Cafe, named Kröpcke, which was founded in the year 1797 by the baker Johann Robby. Today a modern Mövenpick Cafe marks the spot where the Cafe Kröpcke once stood. Even then, Kröpcke was a congestion point, with the difference that today, with the construction of the U-Bahn (metro) subterranean passages have somewhat alleviated the traffic problems. The metro leads to all areas of the city. On the ground floor, street sellers and artists show their attractions, people meet in private or - in case of New Year's Eve or a won championship - for spontaneous celebrations in the street.
Kröpcke is really the town center of Hanover. The main subways intersect here in the heart of the pedestrian shopping area. The vast majority of all the sightseeing that can be done is located within a 15 minute radius of Kröpcke.
There are several shopping centers, cafés, restaurants, and food stands located above and below ground. The lower shopping level, "The Passarelle," has several stores offering everything from licorice to manicures.
Interesting to note is the old refurbished clock in the square. This is often a meeting point for the Hanoveraners. Don't miss the compass, too, which points out the distances between Hanover and other world cities.
