I saw good reviews on YELP.com and decided to give McKay's a try for dinner on a Friday night. The place was full at 7pm so my wife & I had to sit on the porch. We were assured the heater in the cover porch kept it warm. The waitress was overly optimistic in her responses to us. After awhile my wife was ready to punch her perkyness, it was way over done. Appetisers & drinks came reasonably timely. The brie was good, my side of vegetables was small, under cooked & the maple glaze was non-existent.
The meal was extremely slow in coming. So slow I ordered a second drink, one is my usual limit but my little buss was wearing off. I was starting to wonder if the kitchen had forgotten our order.
When the food finally did come I was starting to loose feeling in my toes from the cold. My wife's brased short ribs were charred black with minimal baked beans as the side. My seafood bouillabaisse was good but by that time my disappointment in the service tainted any pleasure I could get from the food.
I am extremely disappointed in the sevice and food we received at McKay's Public House. I would say try a different restaurant in Bar Harbor but the charm has worn off. It is a town where the cruise ships dock, tourist flock (I am one of them) and they are trying to cram 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag. Too much demand and not enough supply. The customers suffer. If you are thinking of coming to Maine I suggest going to Booth Bay Harbor, it has great food and still has some Maine small town charm.
