Bon Festival at Morikami Museum
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/15/11
As planned, we attend Bon Odori, a Japanese festival held at the Morikami Museum. It did not disappoint. The Taiko drummers (Fushu Daiko) were amazing! My sons loved them, as I'd hoped. The lanterns on the lake were beautiful. Fireworks were planned but we ducked out, as God sent his own fireworks show in the form of serious lightning. We ran for our lives back to our car. The Morikami Museum has activities and entertainment all year long. Go visit. It's worth it.
(post from 8-7-11) I planned a trip this weekend to the Morikami Museum with my two sons. The museum is celebrating Bon festival this Saturday, August 13, and I want my sons to experience the lantern send off and the Taiko drummers. I was fortunate to experience the Bon festival in a small village in northwest Japan twenty five years ago and I still remember the sight of hundreds of colorful, glowing lanterns floating along the river as the Japanese sent their ancestors spirits back to the heavens. I'll take some pictures and try to upload them later.
