Fort Caroline National Memorial

Description

In 1564 French explorers founded the first Protestant colony in the US along what is today the St Johns River. Fort Caroline National Memorial is a reconstructed fort commemorating its probable location. The Spanish seized the original colony and massacred its residents in 1565, so not much is known about these early pioneers. The site stretches across 130 acres overlooking the river and features a museum with French and Indian artifacts from the 16th century. Fort Caroline was established as a national memorial in 1950 and is 14 miles from downtown Jacksonville.

Wonderful Day-Trip
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/28/10
I would definitely recommend this as a day trip. We went across the street to see the Spanish Pond (expecting to see a pond and walked well over an hour but didn't reach the marshes). We are expecting to go back since the parking lot was closing at 5pm. It was a great trip, the nature was just wonderful. My husband and I loved it!

Quiet Surprise
By J W, 7/9/10
The fort and surrounding area is very peaceful, but the real hidden gem is the visitors center which contain some amazing artifacts from Native Americans and French and Spanish colonials. The displays also had some great information about the surrounding estuary. I was very pleasantly surprised by my visit here.

Uniquely floridian
By john, 1/7/09
It was a fantastic walk through a preserve. Wildlife included many types of birds, alligators, this yellow spider making a web on the side of the trail, It was as big as my thumb and my wife who hates spiders just had to get a picture of it... There's this platform that overlooks a marsh that gives a fantastic view. A nice trail for couples.
