Huguenot Memorial Park
Named in honor of the Huguenot French settlers who colonized the area for a short while in the 16th century, Huguenot Memorial Park is another one of Jacksonville's many jewels. Aficionados of our fine-feathered friends will enjoy the avian observatory tower, and nature trails, perfect for bird watching. Adventurous types can rent canoes and use the boat launch to access the waterways, while sports-lovers can rent volleyball equipment, horseshoes and bicycles for an afternoon of fun.
This is by far the best location to visit in Jacksonville if you want an awesome beach experience. The park is very economical at 50 cents admission. You can drive your vehicle right on the beach and it doesn't have to be a truck or 4 wheel drive vehicle--cars and minivans are all over! There are several different parts of the beach that would appeal to everyone--including surfers, fishermen and families. At times there are little pools that form from the tide and the sandbars that my 2 year old son loves to splash in. I have also walked out only calf deep and spotted 4 sting rays. There is a great view of Mayport Naval Base with the USS JFK being right in your sight. It's awesome to watch the huge ships leaving and returning. I recently moved to Jacksonville and have visited many beaches and this is the BEST by far. We have even been there when they have been filming movies and photo shoots---so you know it is beautiful. I have traveled all over Florida including South Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, etc...and this beach is the best by FAR! We haven't had a chance to go camping, but I can't wait until we plan that.
This was one of the most beautiful and clean places in Florida I have ever seen! We camped out in a tent in the sand culdesacs and it was safe and fun. It is so pristine and quiet. A great place to bring a new friend!
Huguenot is a great place to camp and swim. Its inexpensive and you can drive right on the beach! Just watch out when the tide comes in!! Oh yeah, and it also gives you a great view of Naval Station Mayport. A must do for beach/nature lovers!
If you are looking for a nice quiet beach on a summer day, this is it. Bring a lunch...take the trash home this is pristine park. It reminds me of the days visiting Florida when I was a kid. Lot's of room to spread out. For the 50 cent fee to get in, this park is a steal.
