Schooner's Seafood House
This is the home of an award-winning Minorcan clam chowder and a variety of other local favorites. This Florida seafood restaurant also offers nightly specials Monday through Thursday from 5pm until 9pm. Entrees include 18 fried shrimp ($14.95), their catch of the day ($11.95), choice New York strip steak ($8.95 8oz cut/$13.25 12oz cut) or the surf and turf, which includes an eight-ounce steak and choice of fish, shrimp, scallops, oysters or crab cake ($14.95). Grandma Bunk's Homemade Desserts include real key lime pie, peanut butter pie and cheesecake ($2.75-$3.25).
I think the locals don't want you to find out about this little gem. It is out of the way so mostly local customers but great food at a good price. The fact that you have to wait for a table and the service is rushed is just a fact at good places to eat. Worth the wait and rushed service to get to eat at Schooner's. Note it is always best to eat what is fresh for the area so ask and get what is fresh. Shrimp is a local catch that I enjoyed here on my visit. Keylimes are also a Florida fruit so the pie is perfect.
We tried Schooner's after reading reviews of those that had gone there before us and they didn't do it justice. This is a simple family style restaurant, nothing special; but LORD the food was good. We tried a few of the dishes nd everything was excellent. We got there Sunday just after church let out and it was crowded, but the service was still first rate. The portions were more than we could eat and you MUST try the Key Lime Pie for dessert!
I am a St. Augustine resident who has seen the quality and service at Schooner's steadily go down hill over the past few years. The wait staff are not attentive and are often rushed(they forget side dishes, drinks, etc.), the food is often served cold (especially the soups!) and many dishes taste like it has been frozen for some time, thawed and warmed. Not worth the trip.
Non exceptional ambiance and food. The stuffed shrimp were small with a dollop of non-lump crab stuffing. Yellow squash was boiled - ugh. Cole slaw ok. 2-fer glasses of wine - a bargain. Service was fine - very attentive wait staff. A lot of locals were there but no travellers [except us]. There's much better seafood in the area.
just moved to St. Augustine so i have been looking for new seafood places to eat. Decided to try Schooners after reading the reviews, and boy am i glad i did.
Leslie was our server and was awesome. Told her they were highly rated and she had no clue that people were writing reviews..=) My drink glas was always full which is my biggest pet peeve when eating out..
Decided to start with the onion rings and crab poppers. By far teh best onion rings i have had in ages! Was not a big fan of the crab poppers, but i was expecting something else. Crab poppers are kind of like a crab patty but in a ball.
The cole slaw was great! I am very picky when it comes to cole slaw and loved it. The hushpuppies were nice and big.
My girlfriend had the shrimp and i had the seafood combination. The amount of food was excellent and i left full. the scallops, fish and shrimp were incredible. You could not taste the oil at all and there was no greasyness on the plate. I was very impressed since most places you can taste the oil.
This will be a regualr stopping stop for me. $45 bucks for 2 appetizers and 2 dinners and 2 cokes.
Do not miss this place!
At Schooners, the service was decent, and the amount of food was commendable. The only problem was that the food was not very good. I had the blackened Mahi, the entree was served a bit dry and overcooked. Another in my party had the tilapia stuffed with crab, and she was hard pressed to find any crab. Your money will be better spent at a chain restaurant, nothing special here.
My family and I were very disappointed in Schooner's. The food is very expensive for the ambience and very greasy. The best part about the meal is the tossed salad. I would not recommend this restaurant!!
LOVE this place! Great food, FANTASTIC Key Lime Pie, outstanding service and the nicest waitress ever! The Mahi-Mahi was so good, my son and my hubby almost licked their plates (rare indeed), my steak was perfect and our picky daughter stuffed her face with a gusto reserved for candy. All in all, this place cannot be beat for the value, the taste and the atmosphere. Heck, I'll drive from NY to St. Augustine again for the weekend just to eat here!
What a breath of fresh air over the BAD dinner we'd had the night prior at the Outback Crab Shack.
Schooner's food is all homemade and FRESH. The hushpuppies were lightly fried to a beautiful golden color. I had the Shrimp trio - broiled, lightly fried and steamed -- and they had to be THE best shrimp I've ever eaten in my life! Sweet and fresh!!!
Their homemade coleslaw was prepared to perfection and makes my mouth water even now as I write this review.
The (again homemade) Key Lime Pie was just like mom used to make. Delicious.
Best of all, the price tag on our mean was very reasonable. Having overpaid on our meal at the Outback Crab Shack, this was a most welcome surprise.
Best of all, the welcoming, charming wait staff are very attentive. We liked this place so much, we went back the next day for lunch just prior to our leaving St. Augustine to return home.
We'll be back -- again and again.
