Downtown 140 is an upscale American restaurant in Hudson, just south of Cleveland. The restaurant's decor is simple and elegant, with golden and brown woods mixed with black. The menu is divided into "smallest," "small," and "not-so-small" plates. Small plates are tapas-style, such as Artisan Cheeses or Kobe Beef Short Rib Dumplings. Small plates are appetizers such as Cheese Fondue or salads like Baby Beet or Warm Spinach. The not-so-small plates tend to be meat-based entrees like Prosciutto Wrapped Grouper or Beef Filet. Downtown 140 also has an extensive, award-winning wine list, and offers live music on Sunday nights. - Marjorie Jensen
We arranged to have a very elegant Dîner en Blanc party, and specifically chose this restaurant for its French cuisine and classy atmosphere (noted in their website photos). Upon speaking to the manager about arranging a table for 10-20 guests (still waiting on RSVPs), the manager rudely stated he would not allow our reservation, and refused service unless we rented out the restaurant for $5000. That is not a typo; five thousand dollars. According to their website, they accommodate guests up to 20, but nowhere on their website does it indicate that they charge a $5000 fee to serve large dinner parties. They not only lost our patronage for such a ridiculous request, but they also lost patronage from every person we informed, and any person who takes this review into careful consideration. It's unfortunate that they could not be more accommodating; their servers would have made a fortune with our table. We appreciate fine dining, and tip generously. I think their poor business practice will cost them a great deal down the road.
I enjoyed Downtown 140 before when Sean Monday was the executive chief and was a little nervous when he left to open One Red Door/Flip Side. However, dare I say that with Don Triskett in the hot seat that the food has gotten even better! Even in this down economy, reservations have to be made weeks in advance to get a seat! Don's reinvention of Sean's beef filet entree is amazing and much more sophisticated than what Sean put out. The deep fried artichokes are fantastic too. While I miss some of the familiar faces from Sean's tenure, Downtown 140 is better than ever and is hands down my wife's and I favorite restaurant.
I found the menu confusing and it was expensive. What we got was good (Tiny, but good). We found the service to be so-so. my empty water glass was ignored while my dates was refilled almost after every sip. I won't be going back.
My son & I are regulars here after moving from the east coast. Raw Oysters are outstanding and paired with a nice assortment of nontraditional toppings. Very fresh! My son who is almost 3 enjoys the cheese plate which comes with much more then just cheese, and the date with chorizo sausage. Beet salad is innovative and refreshing. Nice cozy atmosphere and very attentive wait staff create a meal well worth the price.
PS I certainly do not think they are over priced, the oysters are a steal!
