Stream Profile Chamber
Description
Following the interpretive trail starting at Taylor Creek Visitor's Center will lead you to the profile chamber that is located below ground-level adjacent to the creek. The chamber houses a floor-to-ceiling glass bay window that shows fish and other marine life in their natural habitat. During the fall, the annual spawning run of the Kokanee Salmon is a sight to see. If you have an extra hour to spend in the area, this is a great learning experience for the entire family.
We go every year on October 3 (our anniversary) to see the Salmon, fall color, wildlife, people, and then to camp Richardson for the Octoberfest.
Spawning turns us on!
Free! Nice nature trail with signs explaining the meadows, marshes, forests and streams and their role in keeping Lake Tahoe beautiful. Also explanations of the animals living in the area and how glaciers carved out the lake. The stream profile is really nice, but isn't actually a cut out of the stream like they make you believe. More like an aquarium but it is all natural - water from the stream and fish. By this I mean the fish are stuck in this viewing area, they aren't free to swim down the river. Still never neat to see. The visitors center includes a gift shop area.
Amazing cut-away view of a living stream. We saw several species of fish, including rainbow trout. The highlight was watching two crawfish fight over a dead fish, which ended with one of them dragging the corpse off.
Perfect for a quick family outting (an hour or two). My kids loved the short hike through the forest, the beautiful creekside trail, and the stream profile. We loved the cost...FREE. Depending on what time of the year you visit you can see some really cool fish in the stream profile. Late summer is the best, but anytime is fine.
This was a nice way to go on a short "hike" with young kids. Really not much to see in the chamber if the salmon are not running. We found the walk to go there and back was the fun part.
This place is the best. Great learning tool for the kids and nice exhibit. The trail is acessable by bicycle from the south with just a small walk to the chamber,,,Have gone back for 15 consecutive years...
