UC Davis Arboretum
Thousands of school children come here to learn about the native plants on this unique 80-acre preserve. During day camps in July and August, children get an up-close-and-personal look at nature. Other year-round activities for children include guided tours through the redwoods and occasionally the staff offers stargazing sessions. The Arboretum is not just for children. The staff offers gardening and landscaping workshops for adults.
I live in Davis and love the Arboretum. Whenever I have guests from another city I take them here. They have a large, well maintained flower garden, a redwood picnic table hotspot, and plenty of grass. A creek runs through it, with ducks. It is a great place to go for a picnic with a couple. Great place to bring kids too, plenty of wildlife to see.
Davis was my first trip to California outside of LA. I walked to the arboretum from my hotel, Aggie Inn, and was pleasantly surprised. I saw species of plant life that are unknown on the East Coast including Redwoods. The arboretum had diverse wildlife and was truly an excellent setting to relax, explore, run, bike, and study. I think all university campuses should have an arboretum like the one at UC Davis.
I went there in aspiration to find oneself. Upon my entry, I was immediately plagued with allergies! I noticed the wildlife and habitats. It was not up to my expectations. The water where the ducks swim is greatly infested with feces and trash. I am so outraged by the lack of courtesy to nature. This is by far the worst show of a nature. To top it all off I tripped on a rock and fell into the poop infested water so I too made my contribution.
Loved the wild-life, ducks, turtles, frogs, herons in nests, trees (redwoods & oaks) and stream. People space was good, nice walk/jog path, not too many tables. Takes into consideration handicaped access but doesn't make it a statement.
A person can still hear the freeway in the background in places but not in others.
Overall a very pleasant experience.
