Colonial Cottage Museum

Description

Built in 1858, this rare example of a pioneer cottage has been painstakingly restored to depict lower-middle class family life in colonial Wellington. The Colonial Cottage Museum is a unique and magnificent example of skilled workmanship and much of the original structure and detail remains, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Colonial Cottage Museum Society. If you are lucky, you may even get a chance to try your hand at pikelet making on the original coal range, which is still in excellent working order.

really interesting!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/4/07
it was amazing to see how people lived back then. ive been twice and on the second visit it was a special day where there was people actually living as a real family would back then. quite extrodinary to see the effort people would put back then into making little things, compared to now days where everything electrical. i loved it and would deffinatly go back!

Early NZ Cottage life
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/13/05
This cottage museum, part of the Wellington Museums group (which include the Wellington Museum and the Cable Car Museum - Te Papa is the central government's national museum) is well maintained and worth a short visit. It shows, in a true way, what early European settler life was like in New Zealand. This little cottage survived from that time almost unchanged, and is now offered for view with furnishing and gardens true to period.
