In winter the snow capped Mount Wellington looms behind, while the sweeping vista encompasses the Wrest Point tower, the Tasman Bridge and the eastern shore of the Derwent River. This is a wonderful beach to walk in the cooler months. Be soothed by the lapping of the waves and explore the tiny coves for oysters and mussels. In summer, the swimming is safe with a diving pontoon. Sandy Bay Sailing Club has its headquarters here, and this is an ideal vantage point for watching yachting activity on the river.
