Photographs do not prepare visitors for the shock on first seeing Queenstown. The denuded hills have been described as a moonscape and have a bizarre beauty, despite being an environmental nightmare the legacy of sulphur pollution from the Mt. Lyell copper mine. Once the centre of the west coast, Queenstown still has many fine buildings and a reversal of fortune is expected with the development of the Abt Railway project. Visitors will travel to Strahan through rain forests and steep gorges on a narrow gauge rack and pinion railway one of only two such rail journeys in the world.
