Betty's Tea Rooms
Never failing to delight in service and food quality, Betty's is one of a number of exclusive high tea rooms found within the same neighbourhood. A genuine treasure in York, this is a popular place for both afternoon tea or an evening meal and you'll find the 20s style dining area, right down to the staff's attire, brings a rather old-time atmosphere. Every evening, between 6pm and 9pm, a pianist plays popular melodies and although there are plenty of seats, the sheer popularity of the place means it is always going to be busy. A selection of teas and coffees are available, as is a large choice of pastries, scones and cakes. These cover all price ranges, from the perfectly reasonable to the very expensive. A full English breakfast costs about £10 and a teapot for one is around £2.50.
My wife and I recently toured England and Scotland. We were in York on a Sunday morning in late May. We stopped at Betty's Tea House for a mid morning snack. It was a lovely experience. The staff were charming in their lovely uniforms and very efficient. The menu had a fine variety of items. I expecially liked the Yorkshire Fat Rascal Scones. The room itself was bright, cheery and well decorated.
We were really looking forward to having our lunch in Betty's Tea Room in York, after a 15 minute queue - not too long a wait. My husband and I settled for the afternoon tea consisting of finger sandwiches, a scone and mini cakes and special blend tea for £14.95 each. The bread was not very fresh - quite dry actually and the scones were quite dry also - not freshly made and very run of the mill not what you would expect from a place with this reputation and a price tag of £14.95. We left very disappointed and will not be returning - such a shame as we had waited all weekend to go!
We are big fans of cream teas and during our holidays had tired several. However, we had to sample one at Bettys Tea Rooms. Beautiful window and general surroundings, but what a let down on the actual food.......... never have we paid sooo much for sooo little.......... food. Felt very disappointed.
I would recommend Bettys every time for a great place to eat. I have dined at both York and Harrogate and both are faultless. They are very attentive to you during the service and make children feel very comfortable. The food menu is excellent ranging from Swiss Specialities to more traditional food such as Sausages and Mash!!
Don't be put off by the queues they really do move very quickly. If you don't mind sitting downstairs at the York Restaurant then it is well worth a visit - also you may get seated more quickly.
It is excellent value for money and is truly well worth the experience for all of the family - a real treat!!!
I can recommend the fruit pavlova's for dessert!
'Betty's' place was recommended to me by people at the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.
I can only write about things I liked. Building outisde and inside. Very stylish, friendly and efficient staff, high quality of tea and all other delicious products.
Really a timeless tradition worth a visit every time one goes to York.
I'm not one to go to really nice restaurants. In fact, I cringe when my wife makes me go. I never to go. However, I thoroughly enjoyed Betty's. My wife, daughter, and I ordered many different dishes. We all tried a little of each. The food was fantastic. The price wasn't that bad either.
Guys who are fuddy duddies like me must go. I enjoyed it. You will too
